Function
Employee must be able to perform all facets of Custodial and Grounds work. Custodial functions are performed in an area that includes offices, classrooms, restrooms, common areas, and all other types of working environments found at an academic institution. The majority of the grounds functions are performed in an outside environment where work is performed using tools and machinery appropriate to landscaping, grounds, and roadwork.
Organizational Relationship
While working in the custodial capacity, this employee reports to the Coordinator of Custodial Services, who reports to the Director of Physical Plant, who reports to the President of the College. When working in the grounds area, this employee reports to the Lead Building and Grounds Technician, who reports to the Director of Physical Plant, who reports to the President of the College.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma
- One year of related experience
- Must have a strong knowledge of equipment used and work performed in the grounds and custodial area
- Must be able to properly interpret and follow written instructions and have good communication and teamwork skills
Preferred:
Prior custodial and/or grounds experience is preferred.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for ensuring that assigned areas are cleaned and maintained according to College standards
- Perform daily cleaning duties in assigned area. Duties include but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, dusting (high and low), floor stripping and waxing using floor machines, trash collection and dumping at local dumpster stations, restroom cleaning and sanitizing, mixing and hauling of diluted and non-diluted cleaning solutions, and the cleaning of bodily fluids as a result of injury or illness when necessary
- Perform daily grounds and related duties in assigned area. Duties include, but are not limited to: basic grounds maintenance and care, collection of waste for recycling, grass mowing with large equipment, edging, hedging, trimming, equipment maintenance (operator level), tree trimming, and taking furniture to and from storage as needed
- Horticulture functions as assigned
- Beautification of campus as assigned
- Assists in providing orientation and familiarization training to newly assigned personnel
- Assist in equipment and supplies distribution when needed
- Perform minor, routine, first-echelon maintenance using ladders and hand tools as necessary and as assigned
- Performing set-ups for campus activities
Other Functions
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility
This is a non-supervisory position.
Supervisory Controls
This position is expected to work independently with minimum supervision as needed. Assistance is available as needed from the Director of Physical Plant and the Coordinator of Custodial Services.
Guidelines
This position requires strict adherence to all personal protective policies and procedures and required by equipment operation. Employee is required to follow all local, State, and Federal laws and all Kaskaskia College policies and procedures. Position is also expected to adhere to and promote College core values of compassion, honesty, respect, fairness, and responsibility.
Personal Relationships
This position requires frequent interaction with various facets of the campus community. There will be frequent contact with students, faculty, staff, contractors and the general public.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Duties are performed indoors and outdoors and employee will be subjected to varying weather conditions. Heavy lifting is required in handling floor and carpet cleaning equipment (up to 80 pounds), along with using hand tools, motorized tools, and equipment that includes, but is not limited to spades, hoes, shovels, picks, riding mowers, tractors, push mowers, hedgers, edgers, trimmers, reciprocators, trenchers, and various cleaning equipment. There is a limited exposure to hazardous materials and chemicals.
